The Jeff Bernfeld Interview

My guest today merges the soul recognition of both Scatico and music. In that my guest went to camp and plays music.

He carried his dobro around the ballfields, upper hill and canteen playing the continuum of the high lonesome sound of Jerry Douglas, Tut Taylor and "Shot" Jackson.

My guest was pickin in the pines and laying down his own doctrine. A unique path of counseling that included forming his camp away from camp. No dress code, raid the mess hall and be different.

My guest has always been different fighting for the unsung at both Scatico and his work as a legal counselor. He along with Jimmy Ostrove formed a duo that was part Limelighters, part Seeger, Part Buffet, part Bill Monroe and part chum brothers which was comprised of doc Hamberg and the hard to corral Billy Goldner.

My guest waded through the waters with ease, disarming people with his intellect wit and comedy. When that failed he would pick up that dobro and push fellow compatriot John Deutsch to blow that harp with or without a bottle of Jack Daniels.

My guest loved camp Scatico, he loved the counselors and he loved the campers. He found himself within the eccentric niche of people like this host who brought those intangibles to camp. During the offseason my guest still found the time to show up at his campers Bar-Mitzvah's.

He knows there are other languages beside English and slang, jargon and words. It's the language of music which he used to swoon girls, avoid taking an entire basketball shot in 1986 and help bring people closer to the source.

As the embers of the opening campfire flicker my guest burns into the midnight hours when music listens for the light of dawn....

It all rolls into one Jeff Bernfeld welcome to the JFS
