JFS #40 The Michael Howell Interview….
Michael Howell's album, "In the Silence" was instrumental in the Jake Feinberg Show going from a fantasy to a reality. When I chose to go in the direction of jazz this was one of the albums that propelled me to track down the unsung heroes of the early 1970's. Bassist Henry Franklin gave instant credibility (by playing!) to the show that I promoted in South Central. Since than I have interviewed Ndugu and today I got my crack at Michael. It was well worth the wait.

Hello Jake,
Thank you for being so persistent in getting in touch with me and jogging my memory.
I hadn’t heard those recordings in years. I have to admit that the 70s were an exciting
time for me. The musicians on “In The Silence” enriched my life tremendously.
Along with working with the musicians we talked about, I had my own trio and also worked
The Glide Memorial Church that had a Jazz band. I think Vince Latiano play drums there also.
After recording with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers I also worked with Woody Shaw.
I apologies for not getting back sooner but I took off right after the interview, also interviews
make me feel I should have said something else. But you are a good interviewer so it’s cool.
I’m so glad our music has brought some joy and peace in your life. That’s what we all want.
Thank you again and keep up the good work.
Peace
Michael K Howell
