The Airto Moreira Interview….

23 Aug

When I look back on this endeavor that I have undertaken this will be one of those interviews that I will look back on with great excitement. Airto needed to go to a wedding otherwise we might have kept going.

It was a meandering set with the first forty minutes revolving around psychology, fear, doubt and getting lost in a communist country in Europe before a gig. Part II was an introduction to the Khahasiki and all the other percussion instruments that he made famous in jazz via vocal ad-libbing by Airto. Part III was open mike as we cranked Halloween ’83 from Marin Vets. Such a good time.

JFS #33 The Mike Longo Interview…

21 Aug

Mike Longo sat at a restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl with his father and Cannonball Adderley in the early 1950s. At this point Cannon had been playing in Mike’s father’s band in what was the first de-segregated band in Ft. Lauderdale. At one point a member of the staff approached them and said; “you all can eat here but the negro has to eat in the kitchen.” Mike’s dad stood up and said, “if he has to eat in the kitchen than we’re going with him.”

The Stars Fell on Alabama that night as well.

*I had the privilege of meeting Mike in person and did an interview with him at his upper west side apartment. The next day en route to the east village the recorder I was using fell out of my pocket. Talk with the Spirits.

JFS (SE) Chester Thompson and the Gypsy Life…..

18 Aug

I have long sought after Chester Thompson. The guy moved from Ok. City to San Francisco to live the gypsy life. After night gigs at “Jack’s on Sutter” and the Fillmore District he was back in a San Francisco bank singing “Your Still A Young Man,” which he late busted out with East Bay Funk outfit Tower of Power. He lived among the people and saw how Bill Graham would weave these tremendous multi-racial concerts (Malo, Black Jazz, Jefferson Airplane). You had Chicano, Blacks and Whites all showing up to the same gig. It was a positive Sly and the Family Stone attitude. Hunting and still Open…….

“The struggle was actually the Jewel”….

Enjoy this Treasure and thank you Chester,

JFS #25 Live from Boston w/ Fred Taylor

14 Aug

One from the vaults as they say. I had a chance to sit down with Fred Taylor who at one time was the entertainment director at Paul’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop in Boston. He currently runs the show over at Skullers.

Fred is 87 going on 60. He drove me over to his offices adjacent to Fenway Park and we spoke across the desks from each other on different phones. (Very reminsicent of Wes and Jimmy sharing pastrami sandwiches)

He recorded the classic 10′ of Brubeck/Desmond “Live from Storyville.” Fantasy Records called him several weeks later and wanted to release the recording that he made. He contacted Nat Hentoff to write the linear notes and the rest was history.

Fred T developed relationships with all the legends and had a particularly good friendship with Miles. He also was the first American promoter to bring Bob Marley and the Wailers to New England. So many great stories…..and the recording has real after hours feel to it.

JFS #32 A Record Show and a Hospital…..

13 Aug

Folks,

For the first time since early April the JFS veered away from the one on one Roy Firestone interviews and began to delve into local Tucson. Among the topics discussed with Bruce Smith were the genre of records that tend to sell best when we have a debt crisis and the manic world of ebay. Also if you live in Tucson and have an 8 track or vintage component take it over to the Stereo Hospital Located in Metronome Music. There going to install a record player in my car.

JFS #31 The Phil Ranelin Interview….

08 Aug

“So let me ask you something Jake…..are we live?” {Quoting Phil Ranelin at about the 9 min mark}

Phil Ranelin grew up in Indianapolis and developed a deep musical friendship with Freddie Hubbard. After a brief stint in New York he moved to Detroit and began playing with Sam Sanders, Marcus Belgrave among others. In 1973 he and Wendell Harrison created “The Tribe Label” which was one of several independent jazz labels along with Strata East and Black Jazz. He cut two albums on this label all the while continuing his mission of raising black consciousness and education. In 1976 he received the key to the city with Donald Byrd.

Phil is a great spirit and a beautiful person. He continues to raise awareness most recently heading up the “Eric Dolphy Roots Project” in Panama. Perseverance baby……
